Saving Habits to Get You Ahead Financially in the New Year

If you’ve made a commitment to get a better handle on your finances and save more money in the New Year, there are several things you can do on a daily basis to achieve your financial goals. Saving money can be challenging when you have a limited disposable income and you need to pay for all of your household expenses and other bills on your own. If an increase in your income doesn’t seem feasible in the New Year, you’re only option for saving more is to simply spend less. Many people don’t realize how much they’re spending on food, entertainment and other “extras” on a daily basis. These expenditures can easily reach the three-figure range by the end of the month and will make it seem impossible to allocate money towards a savings account.

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get ahead financially, start adopting some of these saving habits as soon as possible:

1. Set aside a portion of your paycheck for savings and consider it another expense. One of the most effective saving habits you can adopt is setting aside a percentage of your paycheck for your savings account and considering it as a monthly expense. Making this a monthly expense will make you less likely to overlook it and can make you more disciplined about setting aside you funds. Pay yourself first!

2. Eat at home more often than not. Going out to eat can quickly become a costly expense and may end up costing you a few hundred dollars a month. Get into the habit of eating at home and preparing snacks and other items at home. Plan to eat out just once per week or on special occasions so that meals out don’t become a large expense for your household.

3. Join a gym. Staying physically fit and exercising regularly can help you save money on costly health bills, doctor visits and even entertainment. Attending classes at a gym, joining a sports club and just going to the gym on a regular basis can help you stay happy, healthy and may even lower your general health management costs.

4. Make your own coffee. If you’ve been getting your daily coffee fix from the local coffee shop, you could easily be spending a hundred dollars or more per month just for your favorite beverage. Save money by bringing your own coffee, using the instant variety and drinking coffee from your office. A trip to the coffee shop can also be an occasional treat. Adopting this saving habit may just help you get ahead financially in the New Year.

5. Stop buying on impulse. Impulse buys can be among the most costly expenditures each month because you usually don’t have much time to compare prices and do some basic research about the product. Plan your purchases so that you’re not vulnerable to buying on impulse – and spending more than you had planned. Projecting your expenditures can make it much easier to get ahead financially and save more in the New Year.

The only complaint I have is "Eat at home more often than not". Sorry. I just like eating out and sometimes spending is necessary, not only out of necessity, but for the purpose of ENJOYING OURSELVES because we only have one life so if we're not gonna enjoy ourselves now, when are we gonna enjoy ourselves?
