If you find yourself sitting in an avalanche of paperwork, are still searching for that favorite pen, or just can't seem to keep track of that notepad with that client's number, it's likely that your home office needs a little organization! Keeping your space clean and clutter-free will help you improve your productivity immediately; you'll be more likely to work more efficiently and even boost your motivation. Working in an attractive environment and work space can have a very positive effect on your mood. Since you'll be spending a lot of time in your home office, it's essential that you have all the tools and resources you need readily available. Here are just a few ways to keep that workspace organized for optimal efficiency:

1. Install hanging shelving. Invest in a set of cube-style shelves that can be installed directly above your desk. If files and folders are easily reachable, they can be organized in a way that makes referencing very simple.

2. Create a hanging folder system. This file system will keep track of all important documents, and can be installed within a filing cabinet or under-desk drawer. Hanging folders are easy ways to sort through and stack paperwork, and will take up limited space.

3. Aim for a clutter-free desk. Keeping your desk clear of paperwork, toys, and miscellaneous items will help you think clearly and focus on one project at a time.

4. Use a multi-functional copier or printer. These will you all the benefits of a fax machine, printer, and scanner in a compact and efficient design.

5. Designate a space for miscellaneous items. This can be a tray or box that will have a few key purposes. First, it can reduce clutter immediately; as soon as you find a distracting newspaper, magazine, or other item that has made its way to your desk, you can ‘file' it in the miscellaneous box. It can also serve as your junk mail filter; when you get mail or other items that need to be discarded now but reviewed later, put them in this box and forget about them!

6. Develop a filing system. Whether you love colors and tabs, or prefer a more conservative look, develop a system that works best for you. If you don't have a need for alphabetizing, don't waste precious time organizing files alphabetically! If you need to create unique tabs and file headings, make use of the freedom you have in the home office and file away!

7. Hang up a calendar. This is a great visual tool that can help you plan ahead effectively, and keep your projects on track.

8. Make sure your workstation is ergonomically friendly. Your chair, desk, and cabinets need to be adjusted to the appropriate lengths to make sure you are not straining or stretching unnecessarily. Make sure the most important tools you need are within your reach; designing with comfort in mind will lead to better organization instantly. . .and healthy habits!

When you're organizing your home office, it's essential that you design it with efficiency in mind. For home offices with limited space, there are many space savers and filing systems available at the local office supply store; these can reduce the level of floating paperwork that only leads to frustration! Just a few strategies and habits can keep your home office clean, clutter-free, and attractive.
